What Is Dermal Filler?

The Science:

The majority of dermal or facial fillers are made of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally within the body and is a sugar chain molecule found in all soft tissue throughout the body and skin.

It attracts and binds water in the skin, which creates volume and hydration within the skin tissue. It supports collagen and elastin fibres and is a carrier for chemical messages between cells.

The Product:

Dermal fillers are non-animal biodegradeable hyaluronic acid gel. It is produced by fermentation and cross-linking proteins resulting in a clear, sterile gel for injecting into the skin. Many brands contain an anaesthetic within the gel for comfort during the procedure.

There are many brands in the UK but it is recommended to use only legitimate brands administered by a trained medical professional experienced in aesthetic procedures.

Names to look out for of leading brands include Restylane, Juvederm, Belotero and Teosyal.

What is Dermal Filler Used For?

Over the age of 25 the body begins to slow down its production of collagen and elastin which leads to the effects of ageing in the face. Naturally, over time the face loses volume and plumpness, leading to hollows under the eyes, cheeks, and lips and an overall loss of elasticity to the face.

Dermal or facial fillers are used to create volumisation within the face to replace volume loss, recreating a more youthful appearance.

Hyaluronic acid creates plumpness under the skin, smoothing lines and folds for an instant result. Also, over time hyaluronic acid attracts collagen and moisture to the area as well.

Areas That Can Be Treated

Facial Contours: Correct and/or enhance facial contours – cheeks, temples, jawline, nose, chin, ear lobes

Lips: Define, enhance or correct lips

Soften Lines: Soften and correct facial lines, wrinkle and/or folds

Under Eyes: Correct dark circles and hollows under the eyes (tear trough treatment)

Healthy Skin Appearance: Improve tone, texture and general appearance of skin

Hands: Improve appearance of hands by restoring lost volume and reduce appearance of veins and tendons

Décolletage: Improve skin tone to the neck and upper chest area

How Long Does It Take For Dermal Fillers To Work?

Results of the treatment will be visible immediately after the procedure.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

On average dermal fillers last between 6-18 months.

This can be affected by different factors, such as a person's metabolism, life-style and where on the face the filler is used. If the area of the face treated has little movement, such as the cheeks, this treatment will last longer than the lips, for example, which have a lot of movement and expression.

The results with gradually fade over time and you can chose to have 'touch up' treatments to maintain the look created by dermal fillers.

Does The Treatment Hurt?

The majority of medical practitioners will use topical anaesthetic cream to numb the area prior to treatment and also some dermal fillers contain anaesthetic too to help with a comfortable procedure.

No injectable treatment should be painful.

After The Procedure

Post procedure, the medical practitioner will offer verbal and written after care advice, to promote a quick recovery.

There should be little or no down time post procedure. Some swelling or light bruises may occur in sensitive areas such as the lips but this will begin subside after 48 hours and continue to improve over the next few days.

Avoid using make up for at least 12 hours after the treatment.

It is recommended you wait a week before doing any vigorous exercise, and alcohol should be avoided for a day or two before and after the procedure as it may increase the likelihood of bruising or swelling.

Avoid sun bathing (always wear a high factor SPF!) and intense heat (such as steam room or saunas) for about a week after the treatment.

Is It Possible To Have An Allergic Reaction To Dermal Fillers?

As hyaluronic acid is found naturally within the body, reaction to it is extremely rare.

Immediately after treatment there may be a little redness, but this is normal and quickly disappears after a few hours. Any slight swelling, tenderness also will subside over a period of 1 to 2 weeks.
